WonFes Goes Global — And the Figure Hobby Will Never Be the Same
For four decades, Wonder Festival (WonFes) has been the Super Bowl of the figure collecting world. Founded by Kaiyodo in 1985, the biannual Tokyo event draws over 30,000 attendees in a single day, packing the cavernous Makuhari Messe with hundreds of exhibitors showcasing everything from garage kits sculpted by independent artists to major manufacturer reveals that shape the entire figure market for the following year.
Now, for the first time in its 40-year history, Wonder Festival is leaving Japan. Wonder Festival US 2026 will take place inside MomoCon from May 21–24, 2026, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta — and the implications for the global collecting hobby, including India's rapidly growing scene, are enormous.
What Is Wonder Festival?
If you're new to the figure hobby, here's why WonFes matters: it's where the future of figure collecting gets announced, displayed, and sold. The event has two distinct layers that make it unique.
The Industry Side
Major manufacturers — Good Smile Company, Bandai, Kotobukiya, Alter, Max Factory, MegaHouse — use WonFes to reveal upcoming products. The WonFes 2026 Winter event in February featured reveals from Good Smile including Pop Up Parade expansions, Nendoroid announcements, and scale figure prototypes across dozens of franchises. These reveals set the pre-order calendar for the next 12–18 months.
The Garage Kit Side
This is what makes WonFes truly special. Hundreds of independent sculptors and small studios display and sell garage kits — limited-run, often hand-cast resin figures that are only available at the event. These are the raw, unfiltered creative output of the figure community: original characters, reinterpretations of popular anime characters, and experimental designs that push the medium forward. Many of today's major figure designers started as WonFes garage kit artists.
Wonder Festival US 2026: What We Know
The Basics
- Dates: May 21–24, 2026
- Location: Georgia World Congress Center, Building B, Atlanta
- Space: Up to 100,000 sq ft of dedicated exhibit space inside MomoCon's 700,000 sq ft hall
- Access: Included with all MomoCon badges (no separate ticket required)
- Exhibitors: International figure and model manufacturers, independent garage kit makers, and artisan toy designers
What to Expect
- Exclusive figure debuts — Manufacturers will reveal products specifically at the US event, not just repeat Japanese announcements.
- Meet the designers — Visitors can interact with the sculptors and painters behind their favourite figures, learning about the process from initial sculpt to final product.
- Sales floor — Both major manufacturers and independent creators will sell products at the event, including items potentially exclusive to WonFes US.
- Garage kit culture — For the first time, Western audiences get direct access to the garage kit ecosystem that has been Japan-exclusive for decades.
Why This Matters for Indian Collectors
India doesn't have a WonFes equivalent, and travel to Tokyo's biannual events is expensive and logistically challenging. WonFes US changes the calculus in several important ways:
Closer Access to Announcements
While you still need to be physically in Atlanta to buy event-exclusive garage kits, the manufacturer reveals at WonFes US will be covered extensively online — and the US time zone makes live coverage far more accessible for Indian audiences than the Japanese events (which air at inconvenient IST hours). Expect real-time social media coverage, YouTube streams, and figure photography galleries within hours of reveals.
The Aftermarket Effect
WonFes-exclusive items historically command significant aftermarket premiums. With a US edition, some of these exclusives become more accessible through American proxy buyers and resellers — expanding the pool of people who can acquire them and potentially reducing aftermarket prices for items that were previously Japan-event-only.
Market Signal for Global Expansion
WonFes coming to the US is a signal that the figure industry sees significant growth potential outside Japan. If WonFes US succeeds (and with 100,000 sq ft of space at one of America's largest conventions, it's positioned to), it validates the global collecting market in a way that could accelerate international availability of figures, reduce Japan-exclusive product, and potentially lead to more events worldwide — including, eventually, Asia outside Japan.
Content Pipeline
Every WonFes generates hundreds of figure announcements. The US edition will add another major reveal event to the annual calendar (alongside WonFes Winter in February and WonFes Summer in July). For collectors who follow pre-order calendars, this means more opportunities to plan purchases and budget ahead.
Key Exhibitors to Watch
While the full exhibitor list is still being finalized, based on WonFes history and MomoCon's convention profile, expect the following:
Major Manufacturers
- Good Smile Company / Max Factory — Their "Wonderful Hobby Life for You!!" exhibition is a WonFes institution. Expect Nendoroid reveals, Figma announcements, and Pop Up Parade expansion.
- Kaiyodo — The founders of WonFes. Their Revoltech and Amazing Yamaguchi lines will likely have US-debut reveals.
- Bandai Spirits / Tamashii Nations — S.H.Figuarts, Robot Spirits, and Gunpla announcements.
- Kotobukiya — Their Bishoujo line and model kit range.
Independent & Garage Kit Creators
This is where WonFes US becomes truly exciting. International garage kit artists and small studios will exhibit alongside Japanese creators, potentially creating a new market for Western-designed figure art that hasn't existed in the WonFes ecosystem before.

The Bigger Picture
Wonder Festival's expansion to the US represents a fundamental shift in the figure hobby's geography. For the past 40 years, Tokyo was the undisputed centre of the figure world. With WonFes US, that world becomes multipolar — and for collectors in markets like India, where the hobby is growing faster than anywhere else in Asia outside Japan, this globalisation of figure culture is unambiguously positive.
More reveals mean more information. More events mean more access. More global attention means more manufacturers considering international markets when planning production runs and distribution. Every step WonFes takes outside Japan brings the hobby closer to collectors worldwide — including us here in India.
